About Us
Our Region
We service primarily the inland empire (Spokane and Coeur d'Alene), but are sometimes able to help landowners in the greater Seattle/Bellevue region.
Our Reviews We were recently featured in the September Spokane Metro. Follow this link to hear what they had to say about us!
Our Philosophy
I teach our people to LOOK first. Start at the ground/base of the plant, working up to the first branches, at the main trunk looking outward. What do you see?
You see something different in each species, yet a similar practice is performed. The base of every stem is an origin, and following that origin outward is directional growth, or something else something that catches your eye, crossing the directional growth. This is often damage or dead growth. From the base of the plant to the top this same practice applies.
Scott's Beginning
My beginning in landscaping and design came from a high school horticulture course, where I was inspired by Pat Freeman, my instructor. Later, the Study of Bonsai trained my eyes to see the form of well trained growth.
I began Star Pruners by having business cards printed in the summer of 1978, went around, speaking to every real estate company in Spokane, until I received an affirmative response. I began by weeding an apartment complex, thinking "I've hit it big". A few more pruning jobs followed that winter, but not enough to pay the bills, so I went to work for a friend of my fathers in a wood molding factory.
Spring came, and off I went, leaving wood molding behind. Landscaper friends referred work to me and Star Pruners became profitable. I worked hard and did exceptional work (said clients). Much of my work was the maintenance of newly constructed commercial properties.
My gratitude to my friends continues to this day for their help. Thank you to everyone who has helped me make Star Pruners the wonderful business it is today.
